Personal supervision

A supervisor who reads what you are writing.

One-to-one academic guidance on work that is yours: the literature behind it, how well it stands up, how it is put together, and what a careful reader thinks of your draft. The scope and the fee are agreed in writing before anything begins.

Advice on your work, and nothing beyond it

A supervisor gives you their reading and their judgement. Everything that makes the work yours stays yours, including the responsibility for it.

What a supervisor does

  • Reads a draft you have written and comments on it honestly.
  • Helps you search the literature and appraise what you find.
  • Works on the scientific structure of a piece of work: the question, the argument, the order.
  • Answers by email, within a scope the two of you agree in writing first.

What supervision never includes

  • Carrying out your research for you, or generating your data.
  • Writing the work, or any part of it, in your place.
  • Submitting to a journal, or dealing with a journal on your behalf.
  • Authorship. No position on a paper is sold, gifted or promised, by anyone, at any price.
  • A guarantee of publication, acceptance, an award or publishable material.
  • Unlimited revisions or constant availability.

Three things worth knowing before you ask

The agreement is with the supervisor

It is a private arrangement between you and that person, acting as an individual. IBRTC records the agreement and collects the fee on their behalf. IBRTC is not a party to it and does not supply the advice, and the agreement grants no registration, programme place or academic affiliation anywhere.

The scientific side is separate, and free

The Participation and Integrity Agreement covers authorship, research conduct and your record. It costs nothing, it is signed at the Centre rather than here, and it is what puts the work into your participation record.

Nothing is owed until you have signed

Asking costs nothing and commits you to nothing. The supervisor may accept or decline. Only if they accept is an agreement issued, with the scope and the fee written into it, and only once you have signed that agreement is any payment due.

Ask a supervisor

Say who you would like, and what the work is. The supervisor reads the request and answers it themselves.

Sign in to send a request

Supervision is arranged in your name, so IBRTC needs to know who is asking. You sign in once at the Centre and come back here already signed in. Signing in commits you to nothing.
